Nirmal Joy
Nirmal Joy and Sumesh Mangalassery are coordinators of KABANI – “The Other Direction”, a non-profit organisation in Wayanad district of Kerala, India. KABANI promotes community-based tourism as an alternative to mainstream tourism by networking with local people and various stakeholders. KABANI works with home stay providers and tourist interpreters and runs training programmes for them. To translate international experiences to the local level and to influence policy making, KABANI conducts campaigns and research on tourism issues, such as the impacts of tourism on the environment and local communities.
