Steve Turner, owner and founder of Taita Discovery Centre is a specialist safari operator in East and Central Africa and a well known photographer of wildlife and the indigenous people of East Africa. His company, Origins Safaris, arranges trips for people with a passion for natural history, ethical cultural immersion, emerging destinations, tropical islands and eco-systems as well as self discovery, participation and conservation tourism.
Steve was approached in 1997 by landowners in the Tsavo/Kasigau area following the collapse of the cattle ranching industry and the growing reliance on poaching in this traditional ,dry season wildlife dispersal corridor. With support from institutional and private donors, the Kasigau Conservation Trust was set up to stimulate micro-enterprise and generate alternative income sources for the local people.
Steve’s vision was to set up a field study centre as a base for people of all ages and origins to invest their skills in working with the local community or participate in wildlife research and conservation programs in order to create an independent, resourceful and educated local population and secure a wildlife rich eco-system for future generations.
