Maria Chiara Fabbri,
Maria Chiara Fabbri comes from a modern languages university background and after working in the tourism industry for a couple of years, in 2004, upon completing a Master in Tourism Management at MIB School of Trieste, she chose South Africa for her internship. She spent six months in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape and she was appointed Research Assistant of Peter Myles, Director of the Centre for Tourism Studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. There, her major assignment was the community-based project on Alicedale, and the result of her research was “The Alicedale Story – the rebirth of a dying village through responsible tourism development”, with which the Centre for Tourism Studies won the prestigious Skål International Eco-tourism Awards 2004, in the category “Towns and Villages” and it was awarded as World’s leading responsible tourism project at the 11th annual Travel Awards held in Barbados last December 2004. Maria Chiara is currently living and working in Milan and she is employed in the travel and tourism field. Her South African experience has left a deep sign in her personal, educational and professional growth and she is very thankful to Peter Myles, who has introduced her to responsible tourism principles and community-based ecotourism and community building.
