INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES, TOURISM AND BIODIVERSITY WORKSHOP - ARCTIC REGION
Hello fellow workshop participants / organizers,
As requested by several participants, enclosed is a copy of a 2002 statement (2 pages) by Indigenous delegates to the World Ecotourism
Summit (WES).
I have taken this from a larger document (49 pages), also attached, which was assembled for a workshop session on Aboriginal Protocol and Aboriginal Rights at the September 2007 Madison Ecotourism conference organized by The International Ecotourism Society.
This includes the following :

note : 1. Virginia McKenzie was part of the group that developed and presented the Statement to WES by Indigenous Delegates
note 2 : As I understand it, the four only countries who were not signatories to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
are Canada, US, Australia and New Zealand
note 3 : Two articles from the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples are pasted below for your information,
Article 18
- Indigenous peoples have the right to participate in decision-making in matters which would affect their rights, through representatives chosen by themselves in accordance with their own procedures, as well as to maintain and develop their own indigenous decision-making institutions.
Article 41
- The organs and specialized agencies of the United Nations system and other intergovernmental organizations shall contribute to the full realization of the provisions of this Declaration through the mobilization, inter alia, of financial cooperation and technical assistance. Ways and means of ensuring participation of indigenous peoples on issues affecting them shall be established.
I thought these two articles in particular are perhaps directly related to our workshop here this week in Quebec City.
Hopefully these articles, and the other articles in the declaration, will be of some us to the Indigenous participants and others in this workshop as we all strive towards effective relationships of respect and collaboration between Indigenous peoples and their nation state governments, and with international agencies such as UNEP and the CBD.
