The Association of Community Ecotourism of Salto del Limón" is a registered community association founded in 1997 by members of the communities hitherto providing "touristic" services in connection with the falls of Salto del Limón. The association has assumed the stewardship of the falls and the surrounding countryside, including most importantly the catchment area of the river feeding the falls—Arroyo Chico. ACESAL is responsible for maintaining the trails that lead to the falls and for the conservation of the area.
CEBSE, a nonprofit group, helped the communities establish the association as part of its own project in the area of the falls to improve the protection of the environment and foster the sustainable use of natural resources by the local communities to improve their standard of living. Salto del Limón is an impressive waterfall set in magnificent scenery and can be reached on mule back or horse back as well as on foot.
The community members run so-called paradas, where they offer guided horse and mule excursions to Salto del Limón and other places of natural beauty, such as Playa Limón, or horseback tours to El Valle via Palmarito. Most offer comida criolla (local cuisine), soft drinks and locally hand-crafted artifacts, not to mention organic coffee and cocoa.
By using the services of the paradas, for example hiring horses or mules, eating food, buying locally produced artifacts or organic coffee and cocoa, you will be helping people in the communities, not only economically, but also by showing that you too appreciate the conservation of the area.
