ACTUAR, the Costa Rican Community-based Rural Tourism Association, comprises more than 20 community-based rural tourism enterprises in Costa Rica. We are a network of community associations that have developed local tourism businesses to generate alternative income sources for the community and continue developing initiatives for environemtal conservation purposes.
Established in 2001, we join forces to promote community-based rural tourism in Costa Rica and offer quality alternative tourism products.
Their mission
"To promote the environmental, social, cultural and economical sustainability of community-based rural tourism initiatives in Costa Rica.”
The members of ACTUAR work on a diversity of social and environmental initiatives including : watershed conservation, sustainable management of mangroves, protection of endangered species, environmental education, organic agriculture, rescue of cultural values, etc. while operating a community-based rural tourism entreprise, which allows to create a balance between conservation and local development.
