The 16 hectare Bushara island camps on Bushara island used to be habited by over 2000 leprosy patients living within Uganda and the surrounding countries who were being sent to this island by government, a hospital to treat them was established on this island.
Located 30 minutes from the mainland into Lake Bunyonyi, the camp is wonder in a volcanic lake because its endowed with a variety of attractions ranging from birds, boat rides (Dugout canoes), swamp walks, community visits, local market visits, forest walks, cave expeditions, visits to the blacksmiths and the punishment Island.
The camp is also a meeting point for women making crafts to sell as souvenirs in away to increase their incomes through tourism. Community benefits include training village girls in catering, offering scholarships, supporting the orphans’ milling project, training the locals in water safety, employment of the locals, agro-forestry to mention but a few.
