The People’s Center is the place to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai tribes. The traditions and culture of these tribes have been passed orally from generation to generation since time began.
As our lifestyles change with time and technology, we continue to preserve and protect our heritage, history and culture. We invite you to explore the artifacts and exhibits, and to hear the stories of our people in their own voices. We also invite you to participate in our cultural activities, our celebrations, known as pow-wows, and other events reflecting the Tribes. The People’s Center perpetuates this rich heritage, through our tradition of oral history, and by creating opportunities of exchange between tribal elders, youth and the public. Through education, we hope to dispel myths and stereotyping of Native Americans and create better understanding between all peoples.
At the Centre you have the opportunity of enjoying traditional Indian games, or a river float or scenic boat tour on Flathead Lake, the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi River. Remember how to listen and appreciate the sound of the wind through the trees and revisit your relatives, the animal people ; the bear, bison, eagle and deer on a Natural History tour of the Reservation. Hear our perspectives on natural resource management from a tribal point of view. Learn about the issues facing the Tribes today as we look forward to seven generations of creating a sustainable lifestyle.
Native Edventure Programs and Services : "A Walk Through Time", "History, Heritage & Culture", Pow-wows, Traditional Encampment, Customized Itineraries, Coach Services, Meeting & Conference Planners.
A visitor participating in one of these programs will receive a basic historical, cultural and natural history perspective on the people of the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Orielle Tribes. Your Native American Interpretive Guide will share some of the history, culture and natural environment of our people who were the first caretakers of this land. We as descendants continue to try and preserve, protect, perpetuate and enhance the cultures and landscapes of this area.
