Cachote is a small community located in the Oriental part of mountainous Sierra de Bahoruco. Surrounded by cloud forest, its population is comprised of farmers who also survive from migratory farming and coffee cultivation. On 2002 they formed the Cachote Ecotourism Enterprise with members from Ébano Verde Farmers Association and Paraiso Ecológical Society. The Jilguero Ecological Center was later constructed and today the locals conduct birdwatching, camping and trekking activities. They also provide food, lodging services (eco-cabins) and a guided tour through an exciting 2 km trail, where native and endemic wildlife such as the Hispaniola Trogon (Priotelus roseigaster) may be seen and heard. Upon arrival ask for Frank, an 80 year old ecoguide and let him tell all about the wonders of Cachote.
