Zarnesti is situated at the foothill of Piatra Craiului Massif, inside the elbow of the Romanian Carpathians. Part of the Barsa Country (named after the river that crosses the depression), it has view over Bucegi, Postavaru, Piatra Mare, Ciucas and Fagaras mountains. The contiguous forest of these mountains is home to wolves, bears, lynx, roe deer, red deer, wild boars and chamois, as well as other smaller mammals and birds. The area is an excellent example of coexistence between people and wildlife, as there are also traditional activities as shepherding and agriculture carried out here.

Because of its special features (geo-morphology, flora and fauna), Piatra Craiului Massif was declared protected area in 1938 and national park in 1990.

This was the base of an ecotourism programme developed since 1997. It involves a complex package of high quality services and products offered exclusively by locals : full-board accommodation, guiding (including for wildlife observations and flora), horse-and-cart taxi, handicrafts, bike rental, cross-country ski rental, horse riding, paragliding, climbing etc.

The program is open all year long, with different accents in different moments. From environmental reasons, the size of the tourist groups recommended is max. 8, but we can cope with groups of up to 15 people.
